In this list of the 30 most spoken languages in the world, French is actually 10th. In this one, it’s 12th. In this one, it’s 18th. Considering that these rankings are by number of people who speak a language only and not so much about the number of different countries in which a language is spoken (for example, Mandarin is #1 but largely due to China having such a large population, and sometimes different dialects are listed separately and sometimes not), French is still rather important. Think about the number of countries in which it’s spoken, whether as a primary language, as a secondary or governmental language, or as a regional language (think Louisiana in the US). Look at the maps in the front of your book – the influence is pretty widespread.
